Artist's Description

I have illustrated several stories for children, and this is an illustration for a story about the making of a traditional fishing canoe of the island Mauke. I wrote the story based on an event on Rarotonga, when I sketched and recorded the construction of a "Paiere", a traditional fishing canoe by a team of two experienced men and a young boy from Mauke. The construction took a week, while we developed and shared an appreciation of mutual respect for each other's skill - of making the canoe and of drawing. This scene expresses this appreciation, transformed to the community showing up to inspect the new canoe, acknowledging the work of the team, and especially the participation and learning of the young apprentice.

About Judith Kunzle

Judith Kunzle

Judith Kunzle has a big diversity of motifs: the human body in motion, to landscapes from the South Pacific, to California and her native Switzerland. She loves to draw and paint bodies that move, like dancers, yogis and other humans, animals and plants, including mountains which also show time and change. Her study in human anatomy and the structure of living things are loving observation, giving her work warmth, substance and depth. Judith lived for 30 years in the South Pacific, on Samoa and in the Cook Islands, two years on Hawaii and six years in California. In 2021 she returned to her native Switzerland to paint mountains.
