I have illustrated several stories for children, and this is an illustration for a story about the making of a traditional fishing canoe of the island Mauke.
I wrote the story based on an event on Rarotonga, when I sketched and recorded the construction of a "Paiere", a traditional fishing canoe by a team of two experienced men and a young boy from Mauke. The construction took a week, while we developed and shared an appreciation of mutual respect for each other's skill - of making the canoe and of drawing.
This scene expresses this appreciation, transformed to the community showing up to inspect the new canoe, acknowledging the work of the team, and especially the participation and learning of the young apprentice.
