Seabirds dont like people and dont usually nest on the coast of inhabited islands. However, on some of the reef islets of Aitutaki, Red-tailed Tropicbirds nest under shrubs, where every day visitors stroll past in their bathing suits and with wind-surfing equipment. As long as the undergrowth of the shrubs are left intact and people dont disturb them, those birds keep nesting there. The people of Aitutaki have to be complimented on their respect and protection of the natural habitat of those reef islets.
Needless to say, I kept a polite distance when painting this adult Red-tailed Tropicbird. S/He was probably sitting on an egg.
