Artist's Description

Pandanus are hearty trees that thrive on atolls, in a tough, wind and sun-exposed climate with few nutrients in the ground. Pandanus anker themselves in the ground with many strong prop-roots, resisting erosion by holding the fragile land of coastal areas together. The leathery leaves are used for weaving baskets, mats and to thatch roofs.
Tapuaetai is the local, Maori, name for One-Foot Island. The name derives from a legend, but you have to visit Aitutaki to hear about it.
