Artist's Description

This is an iconic scene of Aitutaki, one of the most beautiful atolls in the South Pacific. The lagoon here is turquoise and clear, the palm trees rustle in the breeze and people are joyful and welcoming. Tourism has been a part of the Aitutaki culture since the second world war, when Americans built an airport. Because the island and lagoon belong to the people of Aitutaki, tourism isnít an imposed business, but is managed by the locals, who treat visitors as their guests. I overheard a visitor say: "There is no paradise on earth, but some places are closer to paradise than others".

About Judith Kunzle

Judith Kunzle

Judith Kunzle has a big diversity of motifs: the human body in motion, to landscapes from the South Pacific, to California and her native Switzerland. She loves to draw and paint bodies that move, like dancers, yogis and other humans, animals and plants, including mountains which also show time and change. Her study in human anatomy and the structure of living things are loving observation, giving her work warmth, substance and depth. Judith lived for 30 years in the South Pacific, on Samoa and in the Cook Islands, two years on Hawaii and six years in California. In 2021 she returned to her native Switzerland to paint mountains.
