Tiare Maori, or gardenia taitensis, is a treasured flower in Eastern Polynesia, the Cook Islands and Tahiti. It has a beautiful scent and is worn on an ear, or as head and neck garlands, as buds or open flowers.
This gardenia is a native in Western Polynesia, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa, and does not grow from seeds in Eastern Polynesia. Polynesians brought this treasured flower with them, on ocean going canoes and propagated them with elaborate grafting methods for hundreds of years.
