An "Ute" is a special dance in the Cook Islands (South Pacific) that is performed to a chant. Ute chants tell stories about historic events or as social commentary. It's also a legitimate way to criticize authorities or poke fun at institutions.
The singing and dancing starts with the dance team in a U-formation, the women sitting in the center and the men standing around them. As the song gains momentum, dancers come forward to improvise. Some of the best and most virtuoso dancing is performed in an Ute!
