Taungaroro Landing is a big open U of pristine white sand, surrounded by makatea cliffs. But at low tide, you can peek around the southern corner to see several makatea outcrops right down to the very southern point of Atiu island.
It was a little nerve-wracking to sit there to paint, because the water was first going, but then coming closer softly over the shallow reef flat. I had to finish before high tide was covering the strip of sand I was sitting on - this painting is proof that I made it.
When painting plein air, I finish then and there, and dont usually touch up in my studio afterwards. Painting outside and in the studio are like two different languages, and the outside lingo is both rougher and more sensitive, easily dominated and corrected by the confident grammar of studio painting.
