This is an iconic scene of Aitutaki, one of the most beautiful atolls in the South Pacific. The lagoon here is turquoise and clear, the palm trees rustle in the breeze and people are joyful and welcoming. Tourism has been a part of the Aitutaki culture since the second world war, when Americans built an airport. Because the island and lagoon belong to the people of Aitutaki, tourism isn’t an imposed business, but is managed by the locals, who treat visitors as their guests. I overheard a visitor say: "There is no paradise on earth, but some places are closer to paradise than others".
