Description
This is an illustration of an Atiu legend. Atiu is one of the 15 Cook Islands and a raised island, it had been lifted out of the ocean, including its coral reef, about 2 million years ago. As a result, it has many caves, originally formed by the corals, under water. Today, some of these caves are home to the the endemic Atiu Swiftlet, locally called Kopeka, which nests in the cave. It echo-locates with audible clicks in the pitch-dark cave to find its nest sites.
The legend is about the beautiful Inutoto and her jealous husband Tangaroa, and how the Kopeka bird saved them both. Youll have to go to Atiu to find out how.
