This old Barringtonia tree stands on the island of Mau’ke, one of the Cook Islands, in the South Pacific. Besides being a portrait of a tree that has weathered storms and history of all kinds, this drawing is a wonderful focus for meditating. The mind can wander, just like it did when I was drawing this dignified old tree, following my eyes up the trunk and out along the branches, discovering ferns and many other plants nestled on the rough bark. There is just enough detail to discover and observe, but not enough to distract from deep breathing.
Judith Kunzle is drawing dancers in action, paints mountains en plein air, and many other subjects she encounters. Judith lived for 30 years in the South Pacific, mostly in the Cook Islands, two years on Hawaii and six years in California. In 2021 she returned to Switzerland.
