Atiu is a raised island, it had been lifted out of the ocean, including its coral reef, about 2 million years ago. There are cliffs of the old reef right around the island and on the south coast they are especially high. On calm days, the women of Atiu go out on the reef at Oneroa Landing to collect seafood.
