Fire dancing came about 30 years ago from Samoa to the Cook Islands, and has become very popular with the men and boys. Ive sketched fire dancers at a performance on the island of Aitutaki. First the whole group danced, men and women, then the men lit their torches and the drums started. The fire reflected in the mens eyes, all were focused, all attention, as they performed amazing and outright dangerous moves with those flames, their hands always in the center of the fire ring, the eyes on the job!
